Vaccinated? You Can Still Be A Carrier, So Listen Up

Two staff nurses in our ward got infected. Both had been vaccinated. However, they were in close contact with three unknowingly Covid-19 positive patients.

Apparently, we’ve been working in that ward for almost one week straight — running around, touching patient’s case files, and working in close proximity with one another (all while wearing PPE, of course).

When the three patients’ Covid-19 PCR tests were confirmed positive, all the nurses in the ward had to be swabbed.

As it turned out, two were positive but remained asymptomatic because they had been vaccinated.

The common misconception we usually have is that once we’ve been vaccinated, we are invincible.

We think we are free to stroll around like no one’s business, excluded from social distancing and exempted from wearing a face mask. The truth of the matter is, we can still be silent carriers.

Although asymptomatic or with mild symptoms, we are still capable of spreading the virus to those who are not yet vaccinated, to those who are old and vulnerable, to those who are immunocompromised or with many comorbidities, and most importantly, to our loved ones.

As a result of the incident, all of us working in that ward had to be swabbed. The ward had to be in lockdown temporarily.

All Covid-19 PCR negative patients had to be transferred out to other clean wards.

All PUI (persons under investigation) patients had to be re-swabbed and re-allocated to a PUI cubicle.

New wards had to be reopened to make way for newly diagnosed Covid-19 patients.

Various departments had to share wards because there just weren’t enough space — surgical ward mixing with medical ward, medical ward mixing with orthopaedics ward.

Everything was a mess. Everything was chaotic. And everyone was confused.

The message, however, remains the same: Practise social distancing, wear a face mask when outdoors, stay at home, get tested when you feel sick, home quarantine yourself and get vaccinated.

Forget vaccine microchip conspiracies or bioterrorism. This pandemic is happening right here, right now, so let’s first tackle the issue at hand, once and for all.
